A LEGACY

"For a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour; rather than silver or gold" Proverbs 22:1

Jasper Earl Ormond Sr. was born to Mr. Frank Lloyd Ormond Jr. and Mrs. Bessie Adams Ormond on May 4, 1918 in Greene County, North Carolina. He received his early education in the Red Hill area schools and was a graduate of Greene County Training School. Jasper showed an early aptitude for scholastics and took every opportunity to advance his education.

Jasper joined the Mount Zion A.M.E Zion Church at an early age and remained a tireless and devoted servant until his health declined.

On September 19, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and was demobilized as a Sergeant with the 4417 Quartermaster Company. He was a proud veteran of the Second World War, serving his country in the Southern Philippines. Jasper was a decorated soldier and received the Army Defense Ribbon, the Bronze Service Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a victory medal among other citations. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina to complete his baccalaureate studies. He later received additional training at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In 1946 he wed, Julia Lawrence Harper, and to this union three sons were born. Mr. Ormond (affectionately referred to by many) was a devoted family man and a friend to all who were blessed to know him; lending a hand to anyone in need. He was an elected member of the Greene County Board of Commissioners for sixteen years. Jasper also held several seats on numerous boards of directors; Greene County Healthcare, Neuse River Council of Government, Lenoir Community College Board of Trustees , The American Red Cross , Pitt & Greene EMC, and a long time District Director of Christian Education in the A.M.E Zion Church just to name a few. Mr. Ormond received five Governor’s Awards from the State of North Carolina. He was a proud Aggie and was the recipient of the North Carolina A&T Outstanding Achievement Award.

Jasper committed himself to public education and dedicated over 30 years of service in the Lenior County School system as a high school teacher. He also used his many vocational talents to enhance adult education in Greene and Lenior Counties .

Jasper was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Ormond, and two sisters; Eula May Ormond Scott and Mamie Ormond Bynum, two grandsons; Master Njoroje Ormond and Naytero Ormond.

On Monday July 18tth, Jasper answered his Master’s call, willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

He leaves to continue his legacy, his wife; Julia H. Ormond of the home, three sons; Jasper Ormond Jr., (Pier) Felton Lawrence Ormond (Shelia) and Glenn Maurice Ormond (Toinette); five grandchildren; Jamila A. Ormond, Makesi D. Ormond, Barkeiya D. Ormond, Changa O. Ormond and Master Taveon Bennett; one sister, Luvenia Ormond Becton; one brother, John L. Ormond; two sister-in laws, Marsell Anderson and Marie Ormond; daughter-in-law Barbara W. Ormond-Davis, a devoted nephew, Eddie Lee Bynum along with a host of nieces and nephews; and a dedicated friend, Joshua (Buddy) Moore.

Gone But Not Forgotten....
